There are over 315 million students in India. 83% of them hire tutors to boost their performance on standardized national exams. Better scores lead to more opportunities and greater income potential. In the present day, tutors and students meet via word of mouth. I designed a mobile app that connects students and tutors, verifies quality through ratings, and brings an analog marketplace into the digital age.
In India, standardized exams determine your future. The only way to get a leg up is to practice taking the exams with tutors who know the subject material. Cram schools and online courses already serve millions of students, but in-person tutoring has yet to come online. Students and tutors find each other through word of mouth.
How might we use smartphones to connect students and tutors?

Research
I mapped the competitive landscape, sized the market, and developed a business model.
If students want to meet with a tutor face to face, their only option is to ask friends and relatives for a recommendation.
Otherwise, they can attend a cram school with one teacher for every 50 students.
Or they can purchase past exams from sites like TopRankers and practice on their own.
If they want to find a personal tutor, they can book one for online meetings.
There is no single marketplace for in-person tutoring services. Until Wizz.
Market Fundamentals
India has over 315 million students. 83 percent of those students purchase tutoring services at least once per year, spending an average of 1900 rupees (~$30 USD).
85% of students own cell phones.
The Asian Development Bank estimated the size of the 2012 Indian tutoring market at $11.2 billion. And they only accounted for formal services.
$15 billion is a conservative estimate for the total tutoring market in 2018.
We start with a 5% commission on all tutoring transactions.
We acquire 10,000 student users and 1,000 tutors. If each student user purchases 100 hours of tutoring per year, we earn a net revenue of $1 million in year one.
Eventually, tutors will depend on the platform for marketing and schedule management. At this point, we can switch to a freemium model with advanced features available as part of a monthly subscription.
I looked at the interfaces of Airbnb, eBay, Uber, and Lyft for design inspiration. They are comparable platforms that coordinate two-sided markets.
